CELEBRATE NATIONAL FARMERS MARKET WEEK (AUG 5-11)

I love Farmers Markets. There is just something about being in an outside market that excites me – reminds me of being in a foreign country. Or maybe it’s because I know that the produce is locally grown and I and I like the thought of supporting local farmers or maybe it’s because I know the food is fresh and hasn’t been sitting in an icebox for days prior to settling on my dinner table.

My son visits a farmers market every Wednesday while he is in summer camp.  He likes the different food options and usually he tries something new each time, but what I am most happy about is the fact that he also picks fresh fruit and vegetables to snack on.  Farmers Market are great for children because it is a great way to sneak in a little education about nutrition and get them interested in the food they eat.

The First Lady Michelle Obama Supports Farmers Markets

You can find a Farmers Market in just about every city. The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced Friday that the number of direct-sales markets has increased 9.6 percent in the past year, with California and New York leading the way.

"Farmers markets are a critical ingredient to our nation's food system," USDA Deputy Secretary Kathleen Merrigan said. "These outlets provide benefits not only to the farmers looking for important income opportunities, but also to the communities looking for fresh, healthy foods."

I support the Crenshaw Farmers Market located at Crenshaw and Stocker (Wells Fargo Bank Plaza Parking Lot). It's in my neighborhood (Leimert Park) every Saturday between the hours of 10am – 3pm rain or shine. There are diverse selections of fresh fruits and vegetables as well as delicious gourmet food, unique artisan goods, health& amp; fitness instruction. The market also hosts monthly events including cooking demonstrations, tastings, contests, children's activities and live entertainment.
Just a few reasons to support your local Farmers Market:
·         Farmers/producers sell directly to consumers, minimizing profit loss by circumventing the middleman.
·         Consumers can buy direct from the farmer/producer.
·         Consumers can obtain organic fruits and vegetables from Certified Organic farmers
·         Consumers can enjoy fresh, seasonally-grown food that was produced within a drivable distance from their homes.
·         Local, fresh food is more likely to foster health and prevent illness than heavily processed foods
·         More capital remains in the consumers’ community.
·         Farmers Markets reflect their areas culture and economy
·         Farmers markets empower consumers to become active supporters of their communities.
